THE PROGESSIVE PALLISERS

FEASIBILITY STUDY

BY MIKE JOHNSON

As I became involved in the research into my wife’s Family History I found that one of the branches of the Palliser family moved to Northallerton from Sowerby near Thirsk between 1789 and 1819 and, along with other generations, became quite well known and respected in the local community in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

So:-

1/ How did they come to move to Northallerton ?

2/ What properties did they reside in, or own, or build ?

3/ What were they involved in both in their business and social lives ?

4/ Where did they make their money ?

5/ Where did they loose their money ?

6/ What did they leave behind that was of benefit to the community and a mark of their influence in, and on, the town of Northallerton and its surrounding area ?

As there is little information that was handed down through the family, a lot of research will have to be done using the census, maps, indentures and wills available at the Public Records office in Malpas road, along with the IGI, local history books and records held at the Public Library on Grammar School Lane, both here in Northallerton.

It may be difficult to find out all the information I would like, as the records in those days were not as detailed as modern records and the deterioration of the ink used in hand written records may make reading and interpretation difficult.

An added factor in the limitation of these recordings is the amount of time available for me to visit the Library and Records office during their opening hours.
