1765 Horse Racing thought to have started on Race course on land now occupied by the County Hall

1770 to 1841 Important Coaching Centre "Golden Lion, King's Head, Black Bull, Old Golden Lion" with Stagecoaches "Telegraph, Wellington, Queen Charlotte"

1777 The present Market Cross was built, moved to Standard House in 1872, Reinstalled in 1913

1777 New Grammar School Built opposite the Parish Church

1783 House of correction opened

1785 Court House built on East Road, Next to Goal.

1789 The Vine outside Vine House was said to cover 137 square yards
